Everything You Need to know About Micro link Extensions

If you're on social media then it's easy to see that micro-link hair extensions are BIG right now.

Funny enough, this hair technique has been around for ages and was Hollywood's best kept secret. Exclusively installed for celebrities who wanted their hair extensions to look as natural as possible.

If you've been thinking about getting micro-links but don't really know what you're getting yourself into, here's a quick guide so you can decide if they're right for you.

What are micro-link extensions?

There are two main types of micro-links: wefts and i-tips. Both are installed using silicone lined micro beads and salon professional pliers to attach the hair extensions to the client's head.

Weft micro-links are installed by using the micro beads to form a row in which the hair wefts or tracks can be sewn into the hair. This installed is also known as a braid less sew in.

I-tip hair extensions are keratin tipped strands of hair that are individually installed to small individual sections of the hair. strand by strand.

What are the benefits of micro-link extensions?

The biggest difference between micro-links and other styles like sew ins and crochet braids is that it doesn't require the hair to be braided for the install. This means less tension on the scalp and allows for your hair and scalp to breathe.

This doesn't only create a seamless blend but a more comfortable and lightweight experience. Micro-links give you access to your hair and scalp so you can keep up with your healthy hair care regimen (unlike most protective hairstyles).

Lastly, due to the high demand for more curly textures, it is easier now more than ever to find hair extensions that will blend into our own curls. Meaning no heat damage caused by blending your leave out constantly.

Who are micro-links best for?

Micro-links are suitable for almost anyone as long as your hair is about 4 inches long. Because of the versatility and light weight install, micro-links are even great for fine hair ladies.

But if you're not accustomed to taking care of your hair and struggle with consistency (at home and in the salon), then micro-links may not be the best option for you.

If you're struggling with hair loss, alopecia or bald spots you may want to consider another technique as micro-links may aggravate your condition.

What is the maintenance for micro-links?

If you are diligent about your hair, meaning you have a hair regimen and you stick to it, micro-links will be easier for you to maintain.

You want to treat the extensions like you own hair and cleanse it regularly. Shampooing every 7 - 10 days is ideal. Use the Volume Shampoo to gently deep clean your hair and scalp while breaking down product build up.

Be sure not to tangle your hair while washing by working in sections and scrubbing the scalp horizontally instead of in circular motions. Then work the shampoo into your extensions in an up and down motion and rinse.

Use the Moisture Conditioner to replenish your hair and the extensions to keep them soft and manageable. Avoid applying conditioner to the scalp to prevent beads form slipping prematurely.

In between wash days, spritz your curly extensions with water and use a detangling brush to gently take out any tangles. Then use your fingers and the Amplifying Foam to form curls.

At night you can braid your extensions or put it in a low loose bun covered with a satin or silk scarf to keep it protected and moisturized.

How long do Micro-links last?

Micro-link extensions can last you up to 3 months with proper maintenance. The install will need a refit or touch up every 6- 8 weeks as your hair grows out and the beads move further away from the scalp.

During a touch up appointment you can expect your stylist to move up your beads and extensions back towards your scalp, remove any build up, wash your hair and style it.

Your hair extensions if properly cared for can be reused up to a year so you can save money on your next install!
