4 Habits That are Drying Out Your Hair

The one question I get asked the most about in the salon is dry hair.

Sometimes it's like, no matter what you do your hair stays parched and brittle. And we all know by now, dry hair leads to breakage. If our goal is healthy growing curls, we gotta nip this in the bud... now.

What habits do you have that is leaving your hair begging for moisture? And how do we fix it?

Check out these habits below and see if there's any you need to break.

4 Habits That are Drying Out Your Hair

You're not drinking enough water

Ugh I can admit, I'm bad at this myself but it's so important to drink your water throughout the day. Dehydration stops hair growth in its tracks and can eventually lead to hair loss. Drinking water daily will strengthen your hair, hydrate your scalp, and prevent split ends. Drink about 3 liters a day to encourage hair growth.

You don't clarify your hair

Product build-up on your hair and scalp will form a sealant against any moisture you try to replenish your curls with. This is why it feels like your hair products have stopped working all of a sudden. Build-up doesn't only promote dry hair but a dry, itchy and flaky scalp too.

It's a good rule of thumb to detox your hair with a clarifying shampoo at least once a month to combat build up. A clarifying shampoo like the Volume Shampoo utilizes bentonite clay to detox your hair while infusing nutrients.

You're not sealing in the moisture

On wash day if you're not sealing in all the moisture you just put into your hair, then it was all a waste. The L-O-C (liquid, oil, cream) method is very popular because it doesn't only tell you which products to use but the order in which to apply them.

In the salon I use the leave-in conditioner, Emergency Miracle Treatment because it's light weight and will penetrate your hair with moisture while protecting it from damage. The Amethyst oil will seal and soothes the scalp, while Le Deux is the cream I use to hydrate, smooth and protect the hair from heat whether I choose to style curly or straight.

You're not protecting your hair at night

You know when you go to bed at night, you toss and turn and then when wake up your face is dry and ashy... your hair isn't exempt from that.

You MUST protect your hair at night with a satin bonnet, pillow case, or scarf. If not, then you're letting your cotton pillowcase rob your hair of moisture, cause frizz and promote split ends.

Combating dryness is all in the regimen. Once you can identify what's holding you back, all you need to do is make the necessary changes and remain consistent. Your hair and scalp will thank you.
